In Your Mouth (2019-2020, 12 songs, 65 min)

Dorothea Lasky

Dorothea Lasky

The lush, stinging poetry of Dorothea Lasky has inspired this theatrical song cycle, igniting hearts and minds with ferocity and grace. The intimate 12-song suite engages audiences in a complicated, loving meditation on the personal and domestic, while savoring the depths of the wildness within. Intensifying the performance is real-time installation by conceptual artist Rachel Perry and stage direction by Daniel Fish.

notes

So in the end we can come down to the fact that the baby communicates creatively and in time becomes able to use what is found. For most people the ultimate compliment is to be found and used, and I suppose therefore that these words could represent the communication of the baby with the mother.

I find you;
You survive what I do to you as I come to recognize you as not-me;
I use you;
I forget you;
But you remember me;
I keep forgetting you;
I lose you;
I am sad.

[D.W. Winnicott, "Communication between infant and mother, and mother and infant, compared and contrasted," 1968]

Matt Barbier with WildUp, performing "Ascension" at National Sawdust in BK.

notes Written for the opening of WildUp's Ascension, this chaotic-sounding but precisely-notated piece is an odd but rousing barnburner for metric modulation geeks. Its multitudes of single wind instruments in ecstatic heterophony is inspired in part by John Coltrane's 1966 album Ascension

Exposure [String Quartet No.1] (2017, 18 min)

Fervor image 2.jpg

1. Adjacencies
2. Everyone keeps me
3. Overlay (for David Lang)
4. Everyone keeps me

notes
Exposure is in some way about the fear of making choices. There are times when the thought of complete commitment to any idea only amplifies the cries of potential paths not taken. For me, the energy in this piece is found in the way slices of musical material interact with one other, rather than through a
complete immersion in the material itself.

In the first movement, two very different types of music are laid next to each other, at first bleeding into each other and eventually fighting for space. The latter half of this movement is a mobile of musical fragments separated by jump cuts. I'm interested in the ways that particular coloristic bowing techniques (like the weight and speed of bow strokes, and the position of the bow on the instrument) can be used to control the character of musical fragments and heighten contrast between them.

The third movement is an overlay of two ideas, both derived from works by a revered teacher of mine, David Lang. I took the harmonic progression from one section of Lang's works (the opera The Difficulty of Crossing a Field) and superimposed it on a pattern scheme from another (the percussion quartet The So-Called Laws of Nature). The quartet plays a litany of percussive sounds in rhythmic precision, including those produced by bowing on the bout of the instrument, laterally on the strings, and playing with the winding of their bows.

The second and fourth movements are like verses of a song. The viola, in a way the emotional explorer of the entire piece, is like the singer.

Overlay (for David Lang) performed by the Argus Quartet

Miami in Movements (2017, 27 min)

project305_event.jpg

notes
Conceived by Ted Hearne, Jonathan David Kane, Michael Tilson Thomas, and the New World Symphony as part of the "Project 305" initiative, Miami in Movements is a reflection on, and a love song to, contemporary Miami. The symphonic and cinematic work integrates footage from a series of personal interviews with Miami residents and visitors conducted by Hearne and Kane, as well as recorded audio and video content captured by hundreds of Miamians throughout Miami-Dade, submitted through an app developed by the MIT Media Lab and composer Tod Machover. The work seeks to honor and in some way capture the rich and complex tapestry of the city and its people.

As Miami exists in “pockets,” each its own mini-organism, each a confluence of cultural identities and ever-shifting boundaries, Miami in Movements reflects this geography with discrete movements, each acting in some way as a snapshot of a landscape that can only be grasped in its adjacencies and overlays. The relationship of the orchestra to the community, and specifically of the New World Symphony to the city of Miami at large, is similarly always in flux, and so this piece also aims to reflect the shifting boundaries (musical, political, cultural) that separate and define these entities and the people in them.

"Gentrification is a generational conversation that has gone by many names. We should not discuss what brings you back to the city without acknowledging why you left.”  - Saul Williams from Place

Created with poet/librettist Saul Williams and director Patricia McGregorPlace is a 75-minute work considering the topic of gentrification and displacement. The piece took shape as I saw my own neighborhood of Fort Greene, Brooklyn rapidly transforming under the last term of Mike Bloomberg's mayorship, leading me to grapple with my own role in that process.

I wrote as best I could toward these feelings (Part 1), and handed that text to Saul Williams, who then responded to and clapped back (Part 2-3). Saul challenged the spiraling narcissism inherent in the oh-so-well-meaning white male protagonist exploring his own complicity, by kicking the subject outward to its historical and theoretical origins.

Place is a patchwork, meant to be heard as a jarring, Sanford Biggers-esque quilt, where the edges make it clear the materials have their own infungible properties, not a neoliberal melting pot where all perspectives can combine to make a pleasant if bland smoothie.

An extraordinary work of genre-collapsing music

The Answer to the Question that Wings Ask (2016, 11 min.)

Saul Williams

Saul Williams

notes The Answer to the Question That Wings Ask was written for an ongoing collaboration between the brilliant poet and performer Saul Williams and Brooklyn's Mivos Quartet. A narrator (in the case of the premiere, Saul himself) reads a shifting, probing, conversational series of questions, underscored with a chord progression that is circular, and maybe comforting, but also somewhat ambiguous. The rhythm of the string players' playing, and the motion of their strokes, fall in and out of direct alignment with the spoken syllables of the poet.

read more an interview with JP Merz for the Liquid Music blog about The Answer to the Question that Wings Ask and the fusion of text and music.

Privilege (2009, 14 min.)

David Simon

David Simon

notes
Privilege is a collection of five short pieces, to be performed individually or as a set. The first and third movements are settings of little texts questioning a contemporary privileged life (mine). The second and fourth movements are set to portions of Bill Moyers' 2009 interview with David Simon. Casino sets Simon's response to Moyers' question: "Why do you think that we tolerate such gaps between rich and poor?" They get it addresses the idea that there is a large segment of our population whose existence is unnecessary to the American economy, especially those who are "undereducated, that have been ill served by the inner city school system, that have been unprepared for the technocracy of the modern economy." The final movement, We Cannot Leave, is set to an English translation of As' Kwaz' uKuhamba, a Xhosa anti-Apartheid song. South Africa has a strong tradition of music being used as a tool to fight societal oppression and inequality. The setting is a tribute to that practice.

text:
1. motive/mission

motive/mission

you were always fair
you were almost always kind
weren't you?

you always reached out your hand
you almost always refused to lie
didn't you?

you wouldn't close your shining eyes
would you?

(Ted Hearne)

2. casino
it's almost like a casino
you're looking at the guy winning,
you're looking at the guy who pulled the lever
and all the bells go off
and all the coins are coming
out of a one-armed bandit
and you're thinking
that could be me.
i'll play by those rules.

(David Simon)

3. burning tv song
flashing window
empty street
burning tv song

flashing window
empty street
burning tv song

flashing window
empty street
burning tv song
stay

(Ted Hearne)

4. they get it

we pretend to need them
we pretend to educate the kids

but we don't

and they're not foolish
they get it

(David Simon)

5. we cannot leave

we cannot leave
this land of our ancestors
on this earth

we are being killed by the monster
on this earth

shuku shuku
oh, mother, it's leaving me behind!
i want to get on the train
to get on the train in the morning
i want
oh, mother, it's leaving me behind!

(traditional Xhosa, translated by Patiswa Nombona and Mollie Stone)

an additional note! (dated 10.23.19)
Recently, a choir director emailed me a question regarding the last movement of this piece: “One of our singers has questioned the value of the movement, and considers it appropriative of South African indigenous culture. I was wondering if you would respond to that, for us?”

This is an important question, and as Western artists it is incumbent on us to grapple with the impact that centuries of colonialism has had on our work and our practices, even as these impacts may be divorced from our conscious “intention.”

Working through complicated questions is a part of why I’m an artist, and remaining open to new perspectives, accepting and moving through parts of work or practices that may be problematic, is important to me. For the purposes of facilitating further discussion around this and other work, here’s an excerpt of the response I sent that person:

“The piece deals with appropriation in several ways, and of course the singer you mention is correct that the last movement is appropriative: I used the lyrics of a traditional Xhosa song, sung during the forced removals of black South Africans from District 6 in Cape Town in the late 60's and after, and set them to music I wrote, including them alongside settings of other source texts and original texts in a work I called "Privilege." I wrote the piece as a way of processing the impact and experience my own privilege.

Appropriation is and has been a vital tool of almost all art forms, and is nearly inescapable in the intertextual world we live in. It can be a vehicle for harnessing the power of reference and irony, and a means to subtle expression. It can also be a vehicle for exploitation and erasure. How does creative appropriation serve or subvert existing power dynamics? For me this is the key question. I'm fascinated by the practice of text setting that does not pretend to adopt the voice of the speaker/author, but which rather holds that voice at a critical distance in order to examine difference.

I learned the original song Az Kwaz uKuhamba from my colleague Mollie Stone, a choral conductor and scholar who has made a lifelong practice of learning Xhosa and Zulu choral music and incorporating that music and philosophies of music for political change into her mission as a choral director in the U.S. I wrote "Privilege" after having spent a few months in South Africa with Mollie, where I travelled around the country working with and learning music from choirs who were adapting the vibrant tradition of anti-Apartheid choral music into more contemporary interpretations that addressed the ongoing crisis of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. (I found it incredible how the political import and protest power of the music was being used to turn a critical lens on the very leaders -- Thabo Mbeki, Jacob Zuma and other ANC heroes -- who had been on the front lines fighting apartheid a few decades ago yet were at that time, in 2006, in positions of power denying AIDS and refusing to import and make available antiretroviral drugs to a population that was suffering under something like a 30% infection rate.)

Mollie and Patiswa together made an English translation of this text that captured the poetic inflection of the Xhosa. Because this is notated music and the original Az Kwaz is music from an aural tradition, and because I am not South African, I would not presume to (and had no interest in) making an arrangement of the original song. But I was interested in what ideas would be provoked if a new musical setting both tributized the Xhosa tradition I learned so much from but also placed it in the context of inequality, systemic injustice in the US. It goes without saying that Privilege must be performed with the text and proper source attribution of all the movements printed, so that the audience may clearly differentiate between what is my work and what is the work of others, because if they can't the essential juxtaposition is lost.”

Because (2006, 6 min.)

note Because, written in 2006 for the Chicago Children's Choir and performed since then by youth choirs across the country, tells the story of two periods of turmoil and challenge in American history -- the forced relocation of the Cherokee nation after the Indian Removal Act of 1830, and displacement of New Orleans residents in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

another important note! This piece has now aged and is being performed by a new generation of youth choirs. As with any piece of art, the difference between the place and time from which it was created and that in which it’s being received should be considered as an important part of its meaning.

The piece is about identifying with displaced people, and identifying and owning the history of displacement of oppressed peoples in the U.S. It grew out of some of the slogans and rhetoric being used at protests at that time (think "We Are All Palestinian") which permeated the discourse. The lyrics "because we were ...." were an evocation of empathy and identification with people that were different from you. They're lyrics about connecting the racism and classism that laid the foundation for the displacement of Gulf Coast residents post-Katrina with a larger historical trend of displacement in America vis a vis systems of white supremacy and oppression of nonwhite peoples living on this land.

The act of speaking (or singing) the words "I am [someone I am not]" is fraught and complicated. While I believe that act is a device that can be used to spark a meaningful discussion around discrimination, or identity, or humanity -- and while I believe that leaning into those complications and moving through them can contribute to art that is confrontational and provocative in a helpful way -- I am sure I would approach this piece differently if I wrote it today.

All that is to say, if you perform this music I hope it will be a catalyst toward complicated conversations with your musicians and audience.
